The process of slitting takes a large coil of steel and passes it through a set of rotary slitting knives, creating multiple narrower coils that maintain the slit width throughout the entire coil. By using precision slitting equipment, it is possible to hold width tolerances of +/- .005”. The slit “mults” are recoiled and can be broken to custom sizes in order to meet weight and specifications.

Before a stainless steel coil can be slit, it needs to be made. That process involves a large slab of stainless steel hot rolled into a long, much thinner sheet. It is then cold rolled into even thinner sheets, imbuing the alloy with desired mechanical properties. This process ends with machines that recoil the stainless steel sheet into a master coil. Slitter machines cut the master coil into manufacturer-specified widths, which are finished with uniform edges.
